Have you ever gotten food poisoning? Well if you have you know it's no fun. Well your going to find out the all about the Pure Food and Drug act and the FDA in this article.
Getting sick from food is never fun and is harmful to your body. That’s why the 1906 Pure Food and Drug act was issued.Thank goodness for Muckrakers; Upton Sinclair, Samuel Hopkins, social activist; Florence Kelly, and researcher; Harvey W. Wiley. Harvey Washington Wiley was a researcher who is known for his leadership in the 1906 food and drug act, he also did some work at the Good housekeeping institute. Upton Sinclair on the other hand is a muckraker know for criticizing America's food industries . He also has written over 90 books in many different genres one of those being The Jungle which describes the unsanitary conditions of the early 1900's meat packaging industries. These people were all fighting for the prevention of the manufacture, sale or transportation of misbranded or poisonous foods, medicines, drugs, or liquors. The act was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt. Any company who violated the law would be reported by the Secretary of Agriculture. Then would have to be proven with some sort of evidence to any violation, and if proven guilty would be commenced or prosecuted in the Courts of the United States. The Pure Food and Drug act was passed by the senate On June 30th 1906. This law became effective on January 1st 1907. This law has been modernized in 1997 and was fully embellished by April 1st 1999. This law is everywhere in the United States. This change was called for because many people were getting sick and even dieing from food poinsoning. Symtoms for foodborne illness areabdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. Some common things to get food poisening from are raw or under cooked meats, raw foods; unpasturized milk and dariy products, raw or undercooked eggs, raw or undercooked shellfish, and contaminated water. One of the worst things to get food poisening from are improperly canned goods which can cause you to have double vision, inability to swallow, difficulty speaking, and inability to breath. This is why I think it is a good thing that the Pure Food and Drug act was issued.
Now days there isn't nearly as many peple getting sick as there were before this law was passed. These days you don't have to worry about getting sick from packages products.
