The Dong inhabits their own autonomous counties in the extreme southwest and west, with their centres at Tongdao and Xinhuang. Their language, economy, and way of life are similar to those of the Han. The Yao are widely scattered over the mountainous regions of the south and west. They practice dry farming and are known for their expertise in cedar tree culture. Much of their livelihood comes from forestry.
